Parts of Blount County, Tennessee were settled before 1800. Only the tabular data remains for the territorial census taken in 1791 and 1795, however, and as such, are not useful for genealogical research. A great substitute for these early census is a series of three volumes compiled by Lucy Kate McGhee and self published in 1960’s, Partial census of 1787 to 1791 of Tennessee as taken from the North Carolina land grants.

1890 Blount County Tennessee Census Records
The 1890 federal census was damaged almost in it’s entirety from a fire in 1921 and the total loss was subsequently recognized when a decision was made to dispose of the damaged census material. Unfortunately, the state of the National Archives at the time did not insure multiple copies of the records were available, something that is now remedied. The 1890 census reconstruction must be researched using a three pronged approach, none of which are as good as if the 1890 census had survived. The first is to look at the 1890 Union Veterans and Widows schedule which was housed in a different location and has survived. If your ancestor was a Union veteran or a widow of a Union veteran, then they shall have some information present. The second approach is to use farm, town, and city directories to at least get a listing of adults in the household. Something is better than nothing. The following are the available alternatives for Blount County, Tennessee for the period of 1885-1895. The final approach is unique to Tennessee and that is to use the 1891 enumeration of male voters.
