This index lists Blount County Tennessee residents who filed claims with the Southern Claims Commission from 1871 to 1873 which were subsequently investigated, deliberated over, and either allowed or disallowed. These 76 Blount County residents claimed their property had been taken by United States military personnel for use in the Civil War. The date below is the date the claim was either allowed or disallowed. It took up to six years for some claimants to have a disposition for their claim. Barred claims were those where sufficient evidence was not submitted by the deadline on 3 March 1873 so were not considered.

Greer under the auspices of a Blount County committee assigned to the task. The original handwritten copy can be found on FamilySearch as Film #888878, Item 1. Walker’s Chapel Cemetery is located on the former site of Walker’s Chapel Church. It is on Old Tuckaleechee Pike almost at the end of the Melrose Bridge. The cemetery is on a hillside and is completely overtaken by trees, brush and undergrowth. If you didn’t already know where the cemetery was, you wouldn’t be able to find it just by driving by. I don’t know who owns the property now, but it is posted with “No Trespassing” signs. This is not a complete recording but it was all my husband and I could get considering the conditions.
